1/10/13 Day 7 Duck Run 1

So today was our clinic in Duck Run 1. There are three Duck Runs – 1, 2, and 3. When we first got there, we were in this small little shack that could BARELY fit all of us, let alone patients. This nice woman offered to let us use her house for the clinic, which was right next door to where we were supposed to be, so we carried all of our stuff over including a heavy table from the clinic (Joe and I carried it and it was pretty exhausting, especially because it was probably the hottest day since we got here). It was a gorgeous house which had an adorable dog that slept all day and some turkeys that just roamed around and gobbled a lot. I worked in the pharmacy and we saw about 75 people. We mainly gave out vitamins, pain killers, and Benadryl. There were a few cool cases we had today, including a man with osteomyelitis, which is an infection of the bone.
After the clinic, we went to this ice cream shop that’s own by Mennonites. I had a coffee ice cream and it was fantastic. After that we took the long drive back to ProWorld (the bus driver we had today was different; he went a lot slower and it took what felt like forever). Once we got back, I hung out for a bit while we all typed up the information from the cards that ProWorld will have to send to the ministry of health.
For dinner we had these tacos which were delicious, filled with beans, lettuce, tomato, and cheese. I probably ate about 10 of them. After dinner we went out for ice cream at Cayo Twist, which serves non-dairy ice cream (it’s made with soy). A lot of the people (pretty sure it’s everyone except me) went to this bar for karaoke. I didn’t feel like going. I just want to sleep as much as I can and have some me time. It’s getting to the point where I just really want to be alone and miss being by myself at night and just relaxing.
Tomorrow we have a clinic at Duck Run 2 and then we’re going to celebrate Megan’s birthday by going somewhere to go swimming and have some drinks. After that I think we have a lecture to go to, I’m not really sure. We’ll see what happens. I’m super excited to go swimming though. Other than that I’m definitely ready for Caye Caulker and to go home. Definitely miss hot water and internet at home.

The clinic we were supposed to be at. It was beyond tiny and the area in front of it was flooded and really muddy.

The woman next door let us use her house for our clinic.

Vial of ceftriaxone that was bought in the pharmacy. It was mixed with lidocaine because it was being given as an IM injection.
